It lies on the dry side of the mountain, which offers some of the best walking, and is far more picturesque than Naromoru. Through a woodland, ascend to a broad ridge approach leading to the summit region. The trailhead is located close to Nanyuki on the mountain’s northwest side. The bunk house amenities are the greatest on this side of the mountain, and access is adequate.
Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi/Sirimon/Judmaier Camp (Old Moses Camp) 3-4 hrs, 9km, 860m ascent
Take a 4 hour trip from Nairobi to Nanyuki town for lunch. Travel 1 hour, 2440 meters to Sirimon Gate. Follow the path as it winds uphill through the forest and eventually into heath land as it leaves the gate. The track turns right to Judmaier Camp, 3300m, for dinner and overnight, L, D, about 312 hours from the gate.
Day 2: Judmier Camp/Shipton Camp 6-7hrs, 17km, 900m ascent
After breakfast, take the uphill route, turning left at the fork in the road. The track crosses the Ontulili River after leaving Old Moses Camp and after one hour. After crossing Liki North, turn right and contour through the Moorland before continuing uphill to Mackinders Valley.
Day 3: Shiptons/Point Lenana/Mount Meru Bandas (Chogoria Gate) 11-12hrs, 32km, 785m ascent
Arrive at Mount Kenya point Lenana (6 km from Shipton Camp) at 6:30 am after setting out at 3 am up a steep, stony quarry that cuts through a visible portion of the lower Hall Tarns. The trip should take you about 3 hours. After the morning, go 6 kilometers (2 hours) down to Mintos Hut for breakfast, and go another 20 kilometers (4–5 hours) down to Mount Meru Bandas, 2950 meters, for dinner and an overnight stay on Mount Kenya.
Day 4: Chogoria Bandas/Chogoria/Nairobi
Take a 4×4 transfer vehicle for two hours and fifteen kilometers to the forest clearing, where you will connect with your transfer vehicle back to Nairobi at Chogoria Village.
